The Indian Act is a federal piece of legislation related to the rights and status of First Nations peoples ("status Indians"), first passed in 1876 and amended several times. This act has provoked much discussion since its deployment in 1876, mainly that it is ethnocentric with the goals of assimilation. However, many argue that the treaty does help to affirm the place of First Nations people in Canada.
Why might the Indian Act both CHALLENGE and AFFIRM First Nations identity today? Propose a response and back it up with evidence from pg. 137 in your textbook. (2 pieces of evidence please) To what extent is the justice system fair and equitable for youth?
Most young offenders get into trouble with the law only once. But the younger people are when they first break the law, the more likely they are to break the law again (Statistics Canada study, 2005). The YCJA attempts to acknowledge that youth need different treatment within the justice system that ensures it is fair and equitable for them. Many people in Canada, and around the world, believe that youth are not reprimanded harsh enough for the crimes they commit and that in general, are able to squeeze through the justice system without punishment. Others, believe that the justice system does not treat youth fairly and punishes them without acknowledging that rehabilitation and reintegration are important for young offenders. So, what are your thoughts? Provide at least 2 reasons to support your opinion when answering this question. On the eve of the 12th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon in the United States in 2001, President Barack Obama addressed the nation about the intentions of the United States to prevent Al Asad, the leader of Syria, from using chemical weapons in the future and to send a message to the international community that using these types methods in war is unacceptable. After watching the video in class of President Obama's address, what do you think?
A Federal Law passed in 1995 requires all Canadians to register their guns with the government. The law continues to spark questions about individual rights, safety and security and economic costs. In 2012, PM Stephen Harper abolished the Canadian Firearms Registry and getting rid of years of gun documentation along with it. This, as expected, refuelled the debate and legitimacy of the Long Gun Registry in Canada yet again. So what do you think? Should gun ownership be restricted in Canada?
Please elaborate on your response by providing at least 2 reasons to support your opinion! The Charter of Rights and Freedoms has been a defining feature of Canadian society since its creation in 1982. It protects both the individual and the collective (aka - society). However, there is a constant battle raging in Canada between individual rights and freedoms versus collective rights and freedoms. Which one holds more importance to us as Canadians? To you as an individual? Here is the dilema: YES - I have the the freedom to conduct my affairs without government intervention BUT - at what point do I loose that freedom so the rest of society can remain safe? The cartoon in our textbooks probes at this questions with regards to randomized locker searches in schools. Many opinions were raised and questions made, but ultimately we need to discuss this MAJOR idea below:
How do we decide if the needs of society should outweigh the rights of individuals? Who decides this? I would like you to respond to this questions with an opinion paragraph or two. Also, you must include at least TWO pieces of evidence to support your opinions (Remember and opinion without fact is fluff!) |
